Background of the Study
Youth unemployment remains a pressing issue in Nigeria, exacerbating poverty and social unrest. Skill acquisition programs provide a pathway for empowering youth with employable skills, fostering economic growth, and reducing dependency. In Yauri Local Government Area (LGA) of Kebbi State, the success of skill acquisition programs hinges on effective communication strategies that promote awareness, participation, and engagement. Development communication plays a pivotal role in enhancing these programs by disseminating information, addressing misconceptions, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders (Aminu et al., 2023). This study examines the effectiveness of development communication in advancing skill acquisition initiatives among youth in Yauri LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of various skill acquisition programs in Yauri LGA, youth participation remains suboptimal due to limited awareness and engagement. Poor communication strategies often hinder the dissemination of program benefits, objectives, and opportunities. Addressing these challenges requires the adoption of targeted development communication approaches, yet their effectiveness in Yauri LGA has not been adequately explored (Olawale & Ahmed, 2024). This study investigates how communication influences the success of skill acquisition programs among youth in the area.

To assess the communication strategies used to promote skill acquisition programs in Yauri LGA.
To evaluate the effectiveness of development communication in encouraging youth participation.
To propose strategies for enhancing the role of communication in skill acquisition initiatives.
1.4 Research Questions
What communication strategies are employed to promote skill acquisition programs in Yauri LGA?
How effective is development communication in encouraging youth participation in these programs?
What strategies can enhance the role of communication in skill acquisition initiatives?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Development communication significantly increases awareness of skill acquisition programs.
Effective communication strategies enhance youth participation in skill acquisition initiatives.
Participatory communication approaches improve the success of skill acquisition programs.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the role of communication in promoting skill acquisition among youth, with implications for policymakers, program implementers, and development practitioners. Its findings will support the design of effective communication strategies to enhance youth empowerment and economic development in Yauri LGA.
